The Organization

CAAIP's activities include championing diversity in grantmaking institutions, forging strategic partnerships, recognizing and celebrating innovative philanthropic leadership and sponsoring lectures and workshops.

The Handy L. Lindsey, Jr. Award & Lecture on Inclusiveness in Philanthropy is an important part of the current work of CAAIP. Established in 2003, the Lindsey Award & Lecture honors a colleague in the field who has demonstrated unwavering dedication as a champion for racial and ethnic diversity and inclusiveness in philanthropy. This annual presentation recognizes personal leadership and promotes regular public dialogue on an issue that matters deeply to the philanthropic community. The region's only event celebrating inclusiveness in philanthropy, it spotlights the need for leadership and action around inclusiveness, hopefully elevating the importance of the issue and catalyzing action and conversation around strengthening philanthropy's commitment to inclusiveness practices at all levels.

In 2004, CAAIP expanded the breadth of the Award & Lecture by establishing a scholarship at Loyola University's Center for Urban Research and Learning's Philanthropy & Nonprofit Sector Graduate Certificate Program for a person from an underrepresented community. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition that can lead to a Certificate of Advanced Philanthropy through the Graduate School of Social Work at Loyola University. To date, two students have received scholarships, successfully completed the program and are now gainfully employed in the field of philanthropy.

Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy is currently working to increase its capacity to serve the philanthropic community. Contributions to the organization enable the annual Award & Lecture to continue, and expand its work beyond the lecture. Checks made payable to "Donors Forum of Chicago/CAAIP", are fully tax-deductible.
